Welcome to a second instalment of When We Were Young, a new series that looks at what bloggers were like in their childhood. Travel with me to Canada, where we visit an adorable three year old called Alex. She would grow up to become an amazing thrifter, very funny Twitter-er (is that a word?) and all-around brilliant blogger at The Interior DIYer.

How old are you in this pic and where was it taken? In the photo attached, I’m three years old. Curly blonde hair, pink corduroy overalls and a runny nose. My dad took this picture of me in our hallway when we lived in Canada. I had just constructed a carefully weighted yet chaotic tower out of my parents’ candlesticks and trophies. My dad said he remembers once he spotted what I had made, he ran over because he thought it would collapse (those are some deceptively heavy candlesticks), but I just laughed in the face of danger. I’ve been making stuff out of other stuff since.
What did you love doing? I loved screaming at my parents from the back seat of our car if I saw a McDonald’s, and I’d cry until I got some. There was also a playground in our local McDonald’s. Specifically, a giant ball pit, and my parents tell me it was my favourite thing.
Who was your hero? My dad. My mom was too, but every little girl’s hero is their dad. Both of my parents were and still are my heroes.
Favourite cartoon? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Real Ghostbusters. Both shows introduced me to nerds and I quickly realized I really liked them. Donatello, with his purple bandana, was my favourite Ninja Turtle. Egon, with his curly hair and glasses, was my favourite Ghostbuster.
Where did you hang out? In my backyard or on the road outside my house, because I was only three years old.
What did you want to be when you grew up? A veterinarian. I wanted to be a vet until I was a teenager, but thought it best not to become one as I get far too emotional when it comes to animals and I’d probably end up keeping all the underdogs and undercats.
Who was your best friend? Liz Cameron, who was my next door neighbour and a daughter of my parent’s friends. There are countless incriminating pictures of us topless in diapers eating chicken.
What was your favourite thing to eat? McDonald’s, or “Ron Donald’s” as I used to call it. And when I say call, I mean I’d scream it until I’d get it. That or “spasgetti” (spaghetti).
What was your favourite subject? Art. Which at the time meant anything involving paper, paint, glue, beads or tiny fiddly things. Basically anything that involved making or changing things.
Favourite song/artist? It would have to be Skinnamarink by Sharon, Lois and Bram. They were part of a show called The Elephant Show, and it was my favourite. I still sing that song to this day. So much so that my husband, who has never seen the show, knows the song by heart and sings it to me when I’m in a really rotten mood.

Alright, so I know what I’m going to be singing for the rest of the day. Alex, thank you so much for sharing, and for bringing the LOLs. Come back next week for another interview (and adorable pic).
PS: Last week’s When We Were Young post (it features snow forts and cinnamon toast!).
