Inspire My Day Tip 1: Summer eReading

This post is part of the Alpro Inspire My Day campaign, of which I’m a proud ambassador!

A few months ago, I treated myself and upgraded my Kindle to the new Kindle Paperwhite. I felt a bit indulgent doing this, as I already have an iPad, loaded with the Kindle app, but while it’s great for blog and website browsing (I’ll be posting about my fave blog-reading apps soon!), I realised I wasn’t reading as many books on it. Its big shiny screen means I’m nervous about whipping it out at bus stops or in long queues, as it’s just a little bit too awkward. The Kindle is lighter, sturdier, and super easy to hold with one hand. I’ve just checked, and since getting mine on June 18th, I have read seven books on it! Below are some of my faves.

  • Peaches for Monsieur Le Curé by Joanne Harris: This could also be called Chocolat Part 3, as it brings us back into the world of the inimitable Vianne Rocher. It’s filled with the most mouth-watering and vivid descriptions of tastes, smells and sights, and has me seriously craving some peach jam.
  • Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? by Jeanette Winterson: Her beautiful short story in Stylist magazine had me in tears (read it here) and reminded me of why I love her sharp, smart, moving, immersive prose, sending me straight to this, a memoir of sorts.
  • Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg: I’ve been going on about this to anyone who will listen, but it really is brilliant. Honest, inspiring and packed with incredible advice, I wanted to start reading it again as soon as I finished (for a taster, click here to watch Sheryl Sandberg’s incredible TEDTalk on why we have too few women leaders).
  • Going Back by Rachael English: A lovely debut by an Irish author (and Morning Ireland presenter!), this was the perfect holiday read – funny, romantic and full of Irish wit.

  1. I have enjoyed all of joanne harris’ books, but found it hard to get into “peaches for monsiuer le cure”. not sure why. As for the others…hadn’t heard of them but will definitely check them out.

  2. […] and family. Right now I also have the gorgeous Jeannette Winterson short story that I mentioned in this post, torn out of Stylist magazine, taped up […]
