Woah. Where to begin? With a couple of pics, I suppose…. 

These are a couple of the fun snaps I managed to grab in between absorbing the electric atmosphere in Dublin city on Saturday. Ben and I had spent the morning working on a totally unrelated story that I was shooting, and I can’t tell you how much we were itching to just jump right into the celebrations. 

The referendum last Friday changed more than the Irish Constitution. As the Yes Equality Campaign told The Irish Times, “it has reshaped forever the republic in which we live.” Brian Sheehan, the campaign’s co-director, said that we woke up on Sunday “in a kinder, more gentle, more accepting Ireland” (not to mention getting #hungoverforequality trending too, ha).

Crowds, colours, literal dancing in the streets – it was a historic, exciting, emotional and proud weekend to be Irish, to be in Dublin, to be in the courtyard of Dublin Castle as people cheered for equality. 

While I still strongly believe that basic rights such as who someone can marry shouldn’t need a popular vote, there was something much more profound happening on Friday and Saturday. It was palpable. We voted for what was fair, what was right, and I feel very proud of the message that that sends, especially to younger LGBT people; working on KISS for as long as I did made all too aware of what a tough time LGBT teens go through, and I hope the resounding referendum result shows them how much love and acceptance there is out there.  

I’ve never seen anything like what happened this weekend. What an exciting time to be in our city.
