Arriving (very) late to the Past Lives party
Celine Song's
There was so much to love in Celine Song's beautiful, romantic film Past Lives.
Shot on 35-millimeter film, it was gorgeous in a quiet, understated way – cinematographer Shabier Kirchner worked some serious magic, and every scene sings.
As someone who began life and childhood in one country and then grew up in another, it resonated with me on so many levels. Celine Song puts it so well in this LA Times interview:
“My childhood happened in a different culture under a different name. It’s a silo or a distinctly separated moment in your life that very much feels like a past life,” said Song. “It feels like a life that was lived before the one that I’m living in now.”

While a love story at its heart, and a sweet and gorgeous one at that, it's also about identity and personhood and how much extraordinary life and feeling can be packed into the oridinary and mundane. So worth a watch!
