Have you seen the Lilith Fair documentary?

Fun, feminism and oh-so-much late 90s nostlagia.

Have you seen the Lilith Fair documentary?

I felt a swell of emotion watching Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery on (streaming on Disney+).

I had never heard about the Lilith Fair before, despite growing up a huge fan of so many of the artists who took part in it. I first heard about it on TikTok and then on Amy Poehler's interview with Sarah McLachlan.

The doc is the untold story of how Sarah McLachlan created a groundbreaking all-female music festival from 1997–1999 that ran for 134 dates across 54 cities with headline acts like like Sheryl Crow, Erykah Badu, Fiona Apple, Jewel, Lisa Loeb, Tracy Chapman and Missy Elliot.

There's also a beautiful, poignant section on Sinead O'Connor.

What I loved most, other than the glorious 90s nostalgia, was the unabashed wholesome sincerity, the unbridled joy and gorgeous feminine collaborative spirit, and how, in the words of one interviewee, it "embodies the world we wish existed". So worth a watch.
